Our approach combines a healthy respect for the land with innovative methods and techniques to deliver high-quality, flavorful fruit.
Our Lyon vineyard is located on 122 acres of land in Cloverdale, California at the top of the Alexander Valley AVA and on the east side of the Russian River. The weather of the region is ideal for growing diverse grape varietals.
Naturally diverse soil types
The soil composition of the Alexander Valley is vast and diverse and translates directly into the complex layers of flavors of our grapes. First, there is the gravelly/ sandy loam soils (called Cortina Loam) which is derived from an alluvial deposit that is comprised of millions of years of gravel and sand accumulation from the Russian River. It is this less fertile soil, comprised of the gravelly loam, which is ideally suited for growing Cabernet and Malbec. On the other hand, the sandy, slightly richer soils are more suited to Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.
In addition, the vineyard is also comprised of clay-to-clay/sandy loam soils (called Yolo Loam) which is derived from alluvial deposits from the surrounding hills. Higher clay soils are ideal for growing Semillion and Sauvignon Blanc, while moderate clay-to-sandy loam soil is better suited for growing Chardonnay and Petite Verdot.
Cultivating the highest quality grapes
The combination of an ideal growing climate and rich, diverse soil allow us to successfully grow a variety of reds and whites that are rich in color and flavor.
The Cabernet Sauvignon shows classic tea-like and crushed black cherry aromas and flavors. It has very lush, black fruits on the palate when the grapes achieve full ripeness. The Merlot has the classic Alexander Valley flavor of dried leaves, blueberries and hints of cigar box. The flavor is more fruit-forward ripe cherry and the tannins are never excessive. Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery has been garnering 90+ scores on their Alexander Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot bottlings using grapes from Lyon vineyard.
The Sauvignon Blanc from the old vine blocks has a combination of classic lemon grass aromas along with pear and lemon curd. It has unusual high amounts of flavor concentration due to the older vine age and well drained soils. The Semillon has a ripe melon flavor along with hints of peach. It is also a fuller bodied white that is predominantly used to blend with Sauvignon Blanc. Chateau St. Jean makes a single vineyard Fumé Blanc from the Lyon Vineyard which recently received high scores from both Robert Parker and Wine Spectator.
Our Sauvignon Blanc from the Musqué clone grown on the richer, loamier soils shows more green herbs and tropical fruit flavors. Although not as quite as rich as wines made from the old vines, it does have a great deal of tropical fruit intensity.
